RAIL FREIGHT FORWARD PRESENTS...Renfe Mercancías

Renfe Mercancías is the leading rail freight operator in Spain. They have the largest fleet of carriages and platforms in Spain, and this guarantees high load capacities. The company connects the main Spanish and European ports, making them an essential strategic partner in international trade operations. They provide services as a railway logistics operator able to manage and participate in every kind of domestic and international integrated supply chain.

Renfe Mercancías offers tailor-made services with European coverage, bringing:

  • Value-added services with tailor-made logistics for B2B customers who value agility in transport and transparency in processes.
  • Total traceability of goods: Customers can track their goods in real time 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via their high-tech digital centre for managing and controlling train traffic.

Renfe Mercancías is an integrated logistics operator committed to innovative solutions and a dedicated member of RFF.

Why is RFF so important for Renfe Mercancías?

Renfe Merancías is proud to have reduced all emissions to zero in 2019 in their electrical transportation, since all the energy used comes from certified renewable sources. We’re talking about 76% of all their transport services. Increasing this figure to 100% requires more investments in electrifying all the lines in Spain. Increasing the electrification of rail and increasing the amount of green traction current in use – that is produced entirely from renewable energy sources – are key elements in achieving climate neutrality.

Renfe Merancías is a key player in the race to climate neutrality and is proud to be running this race as part of the RFF coalition. The company has the same ambition as RFF: to increase the modal share of rail freight and drive the modal shift forward across the continent.

Why is RFF so important for Spain?

Rail freight transport must become the sustainable logistical backbone of the economy. This means that rail freight has a very important role to play in Spain. Rail is the only way we can match our climate goals with economic growth and, in turn, with the growth of the transportation industry. Shifting more freight to rail is the goal.

Why is RFF so important for Europe?

Our commitment to sustainability is strategic. Rail is a sustainable, safe and innovative mode of transport and rail freight is the future. The European Commission recognizes this. The transport industry is responsible for a quarter of the EU's greenhouse gas emissions, however rail is the only mode of transport that can achieve economic growth while reducing its emission levels.

This European Year of the Rail is the loudspeaker to communicate and make everyone aware of the need to get freight on the rails. We must be able to develop European rail freight solutions that are as cheap, simple and straightforward as any of our competitors.

What have we achieved so far at Renfe Mercancías and in Spain as part of RFF?

Renfe Mercancías hosted the Noah's Train campaign during the month of September 2019 in Madrid and Barcelona, which made the initiative known in Spain. The COP25 held in Madrid that same year was the perfect opportunity to spread the message of sustainable rail freight far and wide.

Renfe has developed a “Master Plan for the Fight Against Climate Change 2018-2030”. The strategic lines that define the Plan are energy management, energy efficiency, decarbonisation and a culture of awareness among different stakeholders.

The difficulties of 2020 have made the rail freight industry suffer economically but Renfe Mercancías is dedicated to doing everything it can to support the RFF initiative and making sure we reach our climate targets together. We are convinced of the success of this initiative and of the power of its founding promoters.
