Timetabling & Capacity Redesign (TTR): a major step towards achieving our European climate targets

TTR to simplify, unify, and solidify improvements to the European rail timetabling system

The freight transport sector is responsible for around a quarter of emissions in the EU. To achieve the goals of the EU Green Deal, the freight forwarding sector must act proactively. RUs and DB Cargo can make a major contribution to achieving this EU target. To do this, it is necessary to enable us RUs to achieve national and international performance excellence. One major step is the project to improve TTR (Timetabling and Capacity Redesign). TTR aims to establish a new capacity allocation / timetabling process that is harmonized across Europe and supported by new, standardized IT.

Germany, as a transit country, is characterized by international transportation and is currently dealing with capacity processes that have not yet been harmonized internationally. This gives rise to many difficulties. Construction measures need to be coordinated better, for instance. Customers require high-quality services. In the international rail sector, there are many competitors, but also a lot of cooperation, even with rivals.

TTR aims to harmonize these cooperation ventures between different countries in order to guarantee better transport coordination. That’s the reason why we all need to be able to plan for short-notice customer requirements. TTR can offer us that. TTR takes responsibility for securing capacities such as rolling planning and construction measures. By adding Digital Capacity Management (DCM), it is possible to improve the quality of rail transport.  DCM brings further indispensable benefits for infrastructure operators and rail forwarders. It standardizes and makes short-term planning easier and more capacity oriented. As a result, we RUs expect better utilization of train drivers and locomotives through optimized round trips and reduced synchronization times at borders.

All in all, it will help to increase rail freight performance by up to 30 % and achieve the "30 by 2030" target we’re committed to as part of Rail Freight Forward. The EU environmental targets depend on all of us. But rail transport is an important pillar in this. DB Cargo, as Europe's largest freight railroad, with its growth strategy and commitment to a green transport world, is a good player to achieve them.

Ultimately, TTR is essential for a green and strong Europe.
